Download Michelangelo’s David

It took a team from Stanford University over 2 years to complete, but the results are stunning. Michelangelo’s David, the most famous and iconic sculpture in the world, is rendered to within 1mm on this 2 billion polygon model.

In some places you can even see Michelangelo’s original chisel marks. You can also make out the repair line when the left arm of the sculpture was broken off in a riot in Florence in 1527.

This model is freely available for you to view; simply download the ScanView software and away you go (it’s only 3.87 MB but it is Windows only at the moment I’m afraid):

You can download it directly from Stanford University

Once you’ve had a good look round, you’ll enjoy these slightly less impressive renditions:

This 18ft bronze replica of Michelangelo’s David stands on top of the roof of Cosmo Ceramics in Glasgow.

This ‘replica’ stands in front of the Erotic Art Museum in Sinchon, downtown Seoul

Possibly the worst of the lot, this example is 16 inches tall and was bought in the hometown of the David from a vendor in the Florence street market
