Space is Big. Really Big.

“Space is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts to space.”

Douglas Adams - The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy

This video gives you a fly-by view of some of the largest bodies in the universe. You may have seen the Hakan’s Space Balls, but this video really brings home a sense of the enormity of some of the stars in the universe. Very humbling and reminds you that size and scale is really only defined by your own perspective.

If, like us, you like to get an idea of the statistics involved, we’ve compiled this list just for you.

Planets: Diameter: Compared to Earth:
Earth 12,756.3 km 1
Mercury 4,880 km 0.38
Mars 6,794 km 0.53
Venus 12,103.6 km 0.95
Urunus 49,532 km (equatorial) 3.88
Nepture 51,118 km (equatorial) 4
Saturn 120,536 km (equatorial) 9.45
Jupiter 142,984 km (equatorial) 11.21

Stars: Diameter:
The Sun 1,390,000 km - 1 solar diameter (108.97 X the Earth)
Sirus (WHITE STAR) 1.7 solar diameter
Pollux 9.1 solar diameter
Arcturus 26 solar diameter
Aldebaran 40 - 52 solar diameter
Betelgeuse 650 solar diameter
Antares 700 solar diameter

Some of these numbers are open to wide variation, but they give a good idea of what the video represents.

You may be interested in the Larger Than the Known Universe video - in just over 3 minutes it zooms into an image that becomes larger than the known universe. I can not comprehend how this can be true but take a look for yourself.
